Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450 g) spaghetti
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef or lamb
  • 2 large tomatoes, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 cup water or beef broth
  • Fresh cilantro or parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

Cook the Spaghetti

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.

Add the spaghetti and cook according to the package instructions until al dente.

Drain and set aside.

Prepare the Sauce

In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat.

Add the finely chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.

Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.

Cook the Meat

Add the ground beef or lamb to the skillet. Cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and cooked through.

Drain any excess fat if necessary.

Add the Tomatoes and Spices

Stir in the chopped tomatoes and tomato paste.

Add the ground cumin, ground coriander, ground turmeric, ground cinnamon, ground cardamom, ground cloves, sugar (if using), salt, and black pepper.

Mix well to combine and cook for about 5 minutes until the tomatoes start to break down.

Simmer the Sauce

Pour in the water or beef broth.

Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and the flavors meld together.

Combine Spaghetti and Sauce

Add the cooked spaghetti to the skillet with the sauce.

Toss to coat the spaghetti evenly with the sauce.

Serve

Transfer the baasto to a serving dish.

Garnish with fresh chopped cilantro or parsley.

Enjoy your meal!
