Areekah
Saudi-Arabia
⏱ — min. Serves: —

Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup water (or as needed)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup dates, pitted and chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • Honey, for drizzling
  • 1/4 cup crushed nuts (such as almonds or walnuts, optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Dough

In a large bowl, combine the whole wheat flour and salt.

Gradually add water, mixing with your hands, until a dough forms. The dough should be soft but not sticky.

Knead the dough for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.

Cook the Dough

Divide the dough into small balls, about the size of a golf ball.

Heat a griddle or large skillet over medium heat.

Flatten each dough ball into a thin circle and cook on the griddle for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until lightly browned and cooked through. Repeat with the remaining dough.

Assemble the Areekah

In a large bowl, tear the cooked dough into small pieces.

Add the melted butter, chopped dates, ground cinnamon, and ground cardamom to the bowl. Mix well to combine.

Serve

Transfer the mixture to a serving platter.

Drizzle with honey and sprinkle with crushed nuts if desired.

Enjoy your meal!
