In a large saucepan, bring 4 cups of water to a boil. Add the salt.
Gradually stir in the maize meal, mixing continuously to prevent lumps.
Reduce the heat to low and cover the saucepan. Cook the maize meal mixture, stirring frequently, for about 20-30 minutes until it thickens and becomes smooth.
If using sugar, stir it in to add a touch of sweetness.
For a tangier flavor, mix in the sour milk or buttermilk.
Continue to cook for an additional 5 minutes after adding optional ingredients. Stir well to combine.
Spoon the Motoho into bowls. It can be served hot as a breakfast dish, a side, or a comforting main course.
