Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons paprika
  • 1 tablespoon cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon ground coriander
  • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon ground fenugreek
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions

Combine Spices

In a small bowl, mix together all the spices: paprika, cayenne pepper, ground coriander, ground cumin, ground cinnamon, ground cardamom, ground cloves, ground fenugreek, ground turmeric, ground black pepper, ground nutmeg, and salt.

Store

Transfer the spice mix to an airtight container and store in a cool, dry place. The mix will keep its flavor for several months.

Usage

Use berbere to season meats, stews, soups, or roasted vegetables for an authentic Eritrean or Ethiopian flavor.
