Ingredients

  • 8 slices of dense rye bread (such as Danish Rugbrød)
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup pickled herring (optional)
  • 1/2 cup sliced roast beef
  • 1/2 cup liver pâté
  • 1/2 cup sliced cheese (such as havarti or emmental)
  • 1/2 cup boiled eggs, sliced
  • 1/4 cup pickles, sliced
  • 1/4 cup radishes, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup fresh dill
  • 1/4 cup mustard
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

Prepare the Bread

Spread a thin layer of butter on each slice of rye bread.

Assemble the Toppings

For a traditional Smørrebrød, arrange a variety of toppings on the buttered bread. You can create multiple types of open-faced sandwiches, such as

Pickled Herring: Top a slice of buttered bread with pickled herring, fresh dill, and a few slices of radish.

Roast Beef: Layer sliced roast beef on the bread, top with pickles, a dollop of mustard, and some fresh dill.

Liver Pâté: Spread liver pâté on the bread, top with sliced boiled eggs, and a sprinkle of fresh dill.
